Profile

Maya Indira Ganesh is a feminist technology researcher, speaker and writer with a hybrid portfolio of work across arts and culture organisations, academia and NGOs. She has two Masters degrees and is a doctoral candidate at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany.  Her PhD is about how the apparatus of machinic autonomy is constituted by ‘computational ethics’; and the shaping of the human subject as a micro-labourer and manager in this. This work is based on the case of automated vehicles and driverless automobility. She is working towards submitting her dissertation in 2020.

Maya has fellowships with the Berggruen Institute and Hivos in 2020.

From May-December 2019 she was a research associate with the Künstliche Intelligenz und Medienphilosophie (KIM) research group at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (University of Arts and Design), Karlsruhe on their new project, AI and the Society of the Future.  Her other areas of work include: feminism, gender and technology; arts, culture and the digital; visual cultures in activism; affective computing; and how the notion of the human is challenged by technologies like AI.

Since 2008 she has worked as a researcher and info-activist at the intersection of digital security and privacy in human rights defense, chiefly with Tactical Tech, the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, and the APC Women’s Rights Program.

Maya is on the advisory board of ARROW, a sexual and reproductive health and rights policy advocacy and research organisation in Asia; and is a 2019-2020 juror at Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Maya has lived in India and the UK, and in Berlin since 2014.
